About Us
Whedonites United is a group of people who consider themselves fans of one or more of Joss Whedon's works. We have members of all types and are proud of our diversity. Some of us are enthusiastic fans, while others are philosophical academics (yes, we have Whedon scholars). There are teenagers and grandparents, right-brained and left-brained types, liberals and conservatives. The one thing we all have in common is that we have been somehow touched by something Joss Whedon contributed to the entertainment industry. We strive to ensure that everyone feels welcome, whether they are "only a Browncoat", embroiled in "Whedon-mania", have only seen Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog, or stand firm in their beliefs that Buffy should have ended after the graduation.
Whedonites United was founded by William Prater in the spring of 2009 when he embarked on the journey to bring Can't Stop the Serenity to Nashville for the first time. As Will led the first of many CSTS planning meetings, with three interested parties, the ideas multiplied and grew until those four people found themselves the initial crew of a three day all-Whedon event culminating in the traditional screening of Serenity.
While still planning what would become WhedonFest 2009, the crew also began to discuss the future of Whedonites United and the shared goal of building a closer community of Joss' fans, much like the created families so prominent in Joss' work. We get together periodically for social activities, Whedon & other fandom viewings and discussions, charity fundraisers, group trips to nearby cons, and most importantly, WhedonFest - a weekend of all Whedon activities in association with Can't Stop the Serenity, where all proceeds go to charity in honor of Joss Whedon's birthday and his dedication to Equality Now.
Whedon's characters not only form close relationships and chosen families, but they make a difference in the world, one episode at a time. Now, we set forth to find other Whedonites, develop the community bonds, and work together to follow the example set by the characters we love. Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles, Angel, Fred, Gunn, Lorne, Mal, Zoey, Kaylee, Wash, Simon, Penny, Dr. Horrible (in his own twisted way), Boyd, Echo, Paul, and countless other characters have inspired people around the world, and Whedonites United is just one group of those inspired people who've decided "the world is a mess and we just need to rule fix it!"
We hope you'll join us in our joy of Whedon's creative work and our effort to make a difference in the mess around us.
